“The more I traveled, the more I realized that fear makes strangers of people who should be friends.” – Shirley MacLaine
THE FACES OF TRAVEL
I love hearing people’s stories. If you tell me your name, I will probably forget it a minute later, but if you tell me that you hiked the Grand Canyon when you were 10, I would probably remember that fun fact 20 years later. There are so many things we can learn from each other, so I thought it would be fun to ask fellow travelers questions about their experiences and how travel has changed their lives. I think I could write a book just on their responses. Every person has their own story. All of their answers are different but similar at the same time, and that’s what I love about it.
Travel Has So Many Looks
The traveling retired couple that’s RVing across the US, the person that quit their job in their 40s and is living out of a backpack, the solo female that is traveling in a van with her dog driving from North America to South America, a family of 6 homeschooling their kids as they travel the world…. Everyone has a story to tell about how travel has changed their life in some way that can be inspiring to others.
A common response that I got from people after answering their questions was… “That was fun!” It brought back memories and gave them a mental break from their hectic daily lives and made them think about the awesome experiences and memories that they had while traveling. Reading their responses made me think HELL YEAH, this is why we travel! It made me want to book the next flight out of here.
Michelle who I met on a slow boat from Cambodia to Laos is the first “Faces of Travel” highlight.
The Takeaways
Some people were fortunate enough to start traveling very young, others started later in life. The biggest takeaway is… it’s never too late to start and catch the bug. Anything is possible if you want to do it. Travel has so many faces and touches us in different ways and that is what is so awesome about it. And it doesn’t have to be anything crazy. Maybe it’s taking your first trip to Florida or going on your first camping trip an hour away. Travel is travel!
The beauty of travel is you never know where it is going to take you.
Travel can lead you to your soulmate, heal a broken heart, make your superpowers as a parent even stronger, hit the reset button on your mind and soul, or just make you feel alive again. Look for our posts about the solo mom that hiked with her two young kids through the Himalayas, a former classmate of mine that met Fidel Castro during Semester at Sea in College and randomly hung out with a NASA astronaut during a solar eclipse in Chile, a fellow traveler that quit her job, sold all of her belongings and moved to Asia. These are just to name a few!
